Pregnancy Pain or Postpartum Issues?

During or after pregnancy are you experiencing pain (spine or joint), having difficulty doing daily activities due to pain, or having urinary or fecal incontinence?
 
After pregnancy do you have issues with your c-section scar, diastasis recti (separated abdominals), or blocked milk ducts?  
 
Many women experience pain and difficulty doing daily activities during and after pregnancy.  There are a lot of hormonal changes in the body that occur to prepare for childbirth that can lead to back and joint pain. 
 
Pain during and after pregnancy responds best to a non-aggressive, hands on approach that considers the changes in the joints from pregnancy hormones. We are able to gently work on the muscles to relieve tension to allow for normal movement.  Spine and joint pain often results from a long period of poor posture and abnormal joint function from pregnancy posture.  
 
Labor and delivery can cause a lot of stress to the pelvic floor muscles that can lead to pain and incontinence. After delivery, some women may experience blocked milk ducts or painful scar tissue from cesarean sections or episiotomies. Women also want to get back “in shape” following birth and need to be aware of ways to do this without causing more problems. Sit ups, planks, and exercise to loose the baby weight are common activities women want to do following delivery that can cause issues if not done correctly

Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation)?

Do you have a separation of the abdominal muscles?  
 
Diastasis Recti is a widening of the connective tissue between your 6 pack muscles in your tummy.  This is usually not painful but it can lead to a "bluge" or "pooch" when you lift or do sit ups.  
 
While this can happen with pregnancy, it can also occur with gaining weight or after abdominal surgery.  
 
Women want to get back “in shape” following birth and need to be aware of ways to do this without causing more problems.  Sit ups, planks, and exercise to loose the baby weight are common activities women want to do following delivery that can cause issues if not done correctly.

Sometimes scars are sensitive and don't look the way you want them to.

Osteoporosis or Low Bone Density?

Do you have low bone density, a "dowagers hump",  previous hip/ wrist/ spine fractures or have you lost hight as you got older?
 
Physical Therapy can help by teaching you exercises to prevent falls and strengthen bones.  Improvement in posture is possible with attention to develop strength in the muscles that keep your spine straighter and taller.  It is also important to learn to do daily activities in a way that protectes your bones.
